Panathinaikos BC Appoints Nikos Pappas as Technical Director; Giorgos Gkotzogiannis Joins as Team Manager

Panathinaikos BC is undergoing significant changes within its basketball operations staff, with Nikos Pappas set to return to the club as the new Technical Director. This appointment follows the departure of Sani Bečirović, whose two-year contract concluded. Additionally, Giorgos Gkotzogiannis is expected to join the technical staff as the new Team Manager.

Nikos Pappas Returns as Technical Director

Nikos Pappas, a familiar figure within the Panathinaikos organisation, is making his comeback to the "Greens" to assume the crucial role of Technical Director. This move comes after the club confirmed on Thursday, June 19, that Sani Bečirović would not continue in the position.

Pappas is currently serving as an international scout for the Chicago Bulls in the NBA, a role he has held for nearly three years since 2022. During his time in the world's premier basketball league, he has gained extensive knowledge, insights, and further experience. His imminent release from the six-time NBA champions will pave the way for his return to OAKA.

Pappas's history with Panathinaikos is extensive, spanning eight years across three different roles prior to his NBA stint:

Assistant Coach (2014 - early 2019-20 season): During this period, he worked alongside prominent coaches such as Xavi Pascual and Rick Pitino.
Roster/Basketball Department Director: Following his coaching role.
Sports Director (Summer 2020 - April 2022): In this capacity, he played a pivotal role in securing key Greek talents, including Alexandros Samodurov, Lefteris Mantzoukas, and Neoklis Avdalas (for whom he specifically advocated for a professional contract), reinforcing the team's Greek core.

His deep understanding of the club's culture, combined with his recent international experience, positions him as a strategic choice for the technical director role.

Giorgos Gkotzogiannis to Join as Team Manager

In parallel with Pappas's return, Panathinaikos is also strengthening its technical staff with the addition of Giorgos Gkotzogiannis, who is expected to take on the role of Team Manager.

Gkotzogiannis brings a wealth of experience from Kolossos Rhodes, where he had been a part of their staff since the 2011-12 season, marking an impressive tenure of over a decade with the club.

Born on January 13, 1977, Gkotzogiannis also had a notable playing career. He played for various Greek clubs, including Esperos (A1), Ilisiakos, Peiraikos, Sporting (for six years), Pagrati, A.S. Kefalonia, before concluding his playing career in the 2009-10 season with Kronos.
